Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
The most dramatic photography location in San Diego. Sea cliffs drop 40-60 feet directly into the Pacific, and the wave action carves sea caves and blowhole formations that are incredibly photogenic. Come at sunset and position yourself looking north for the best compositions. Long exposure shots of the wave surge are extraordinary here.
Windansea Beach
A rocky, dramatic beach with massive granite boulders emerging from the surf. One of the best spots on the coast for long-exposure seascape photography. The chaos of the rocks and the silk-smooth long-exposure water creates a strong visual tension that works beautifully as a fine art print.
Cabrillo National Monument
Tidal pools and a panoramic view of the San Diego Bay, the city, and the Pacific from Point Loma. The tidepools at the base of the monument are world-class — colorful, teeming with life, and best photographed during negative tide events at sunrise.
La Jolla Cove
Sea lions, pelicans, and crystal-clear water in a natural cove surrounded by cliffs. The sea lions here are completely habituated to humans — you can get within feet with a wide angle. Shoot at golden hour when the warm light hits the cove and the marine life is most active.
Torrey Pines State Reserve
Ancient Torrey Pine trees on bluffs overlooking the Pacific. The combination of gnarled tree silhouettes against ocean sunsets is one of California’s most distinctive photography environments.
Best Time of Year for San Diego Photography
- Winter (November–March) — lower angle sun creates better light direction, stormy swells produce dramatic wave photography, green coastal hills
- Summer — “June Gloom” creates soft, diffused morning light that is excellent for tidal pool work
- Spring (March–May) — wildflower bloom on the coastal bluffs, excellent whale migration photography offshore
