How to Hang Large Format Photography Prints

A large format photography print is a significant acquisition — both financially and visually. Installing it properly ensures the print is secure, level, and displayed to maximum effect. This guide covers everything you need to know about hanging large format prints, from wall preparation to final lighting.

Before You Hang: Framing Considerations

If your large format print arrives unframed (which is standard for archival prints shipped in tubes), you will need to frame it before installation. For prints 24×36 and larger, professional framing is strongly recommended. A frame adds structural rigidity that makes hanging safer and more secure. Use:

  • A frame with hanging hardware rated for the print’s weight (including the frame itself)
  • Acid-free mat board if you are matting the print
  • UV-protective glazing (museum glass or UV acrylic) to protect the archival paper from light degradation

Finding the Right Wall Location

Consider three factors when choosing where to hang a large format print:

  1. Light exposure — Avoid direct sunlight. UV light from windows is the primary cause of print fading over time, even with archival inks and paper. Choose a wall that receives indirect or ambient light.
  2. Viewing distance — Large format prints are designed to be viewed from 6–10 feet. Ensure the room allows enough depth for the print to read properly at this distance.
  3. Visual centering — The center of the print should typically hang at eye level, approximately 57–60 inches from the floor to the center of the image. Over furniture (sofas, consoles), hang the print 6–12 inches above the furniture’s top edge.

Wall Anchors and Hardware

This is the most critical safety consideration for large format prints. Standard picture hooks are adequate for prints under 16 pounds. For larger prints — anything 24×36 or bigger in a substantial frame — use:

  • Wall studs — The gold standard. Use a stud finder, locate studs, and drive screws directly into wood. This supports any weight.
  • Heavy-duty drywall anchors — If studs are not available in the right location, use toggle bolt anchors rated for at least twice the estimated weight of the framed print.
  • French cleats — A two-part interlocking cleat system that distributes weight across a wide wall area. Ideal for very large format prints (40×60 and above) where secure, flush mounting is important.

Lighting Your Large Format Print

Proper lighting transforms a large format print. Options include:

  • Picture lights — Mounted above the print, these provide focused illumination that brings out the print’s tonal depth and detail.
  • Track lighting — Adjustable track lights allow you to direct light precisely onto the print without shadows.
  • Recessed lighting — In spaces with recessed ceilings, adjustable recessed fixtures directed at the print provide clean, unobtrusive illumination.
