Choosing the wrong size is the most common mistake fine art print buyers make. Too small, and the print disappears on the wall. Too large, and it overwhelms the space. This guide gives you the exact formulas for getting it right.
The Two-Thirds Rule
A print should fill at least two-thirds of the wall space it occupies. If your wall is 6 feet wide, your print should be at least 4 feet (48 inches) wide — or you should use a grouping of smaller prints.
Room-by-Room Size Guide
- Living room primary wall: 24×36″ minimum, 30×40″ or 40×60″ for high-impact
- Bedroom above headboard: Match the headboard width, typically 16×20″ to 20×30″
- Home office: 11×14″ to 16×20″
- Hallway: Vertical orientation, 11×14″ to 16×24″
- Dining room: 16×20″ to 24×36″ depending on wall size
How to Measure
Tape a piece of paper to the wall at the exact dimensions you’re considering. Live with it for a day. This simple trick prevents expensive mistakes and is used by professional interior designers.
