Fine Art Photography — How to Care for Your Print

A fine art giclée print on archival cotton rag paper, properly cared for, will outlast you. The same print, improperly handled, can be significantly damaged within months. This guide covers everything you need to know to protect your investment.

Framing

Always use UV-filtering glazing. Standard glass transmits UV light that degrades even archival pigment inks. UV-filtering glass or acrylic (such as Tru Vue Museum Glass or Optium Museum Acrylic) blocks 99% of UV radiation and is the single most important protective measure you can take.

Use acid-free matting and backing. Regular cardboard and paper are acidic and will yellow and damage the print over time. Specify acid-free (archival) materials to your framer.

Leave a gap between the glazing and the print surface. The print should not touch the glass or acrylic. A mat or spacers create the necessary separation.

Hanging and Display

  • Avoid direct sunlight — even UV-filtered glass will not fully protect against prolonged direct exposure
  • Avoid hanging near heating vents, radiators, or air conditioning units — temperature fluctuations cause paper to expand and contract
  • Ideal display conditions: 65-70°F, 40-50% relative humidity
  • LED lighting is the best choice for illuminating fine art — it produces minimal UV and very little heat

Handling

  • Always handle prints by the edges — skin oils can damage the print surface
  • Never touch the image area directly
  • If handling an unframed print, use clean cotton gloves
  • Keep prints horizontal when unframed — never store vertically for extended periods

Storage

Unframed prints should be stored flat, interleaved with acid-free glassine paper, in an archival flat file or portfolio box. Store in a cool, dry, dark environment. Never store in a basement (humidity) or attic (temperature extremes).

Metal Prints

ChromaLuxe metal prints require minimal care. The image is infused into the aluminum surface and is waterproof, scratch-resistant, and UV-stable. Wipe with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. No special framing or UV protection required.
