Florida Everglades, USA
Exposed limestone marl at the edge of an Everglades slough at sunset — the still water reflecting a sky of orange cloud and blue hour. A composition that only exists in the dry season.
The Story
The Everglades limestone bedrock is normally submerged. In the dry season, when water levels drop, the ancient marl is exposed along the slough edges — creating a foreground that rewards wide-angle photography in a way the flooded summer landscape cannot. This image was made at the precise moment when the sunset color was at maximum saturation and the water was completely still.
As the Everglades is further drained and managed, the seasonal patterns that expose the limestone marl are disrupted. These specific conditions may not persist indefinitely.
