Bahia Honda, Florida Keys
The Old Bahia Honda Rail Bridge framing the setting sun exactly between the two surviving steel trusses. The last remnant of Henry Flagler's "Eighth Wonder of the World" railroad.
The Story
The Old Bahia Honda Rail Bridge was part of Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway extension to Key West — completed in 1912 and called the Eighth Wonder of the World. The bridge was partially demolished after Hurricane Donna in 1960. What remains are two sections of the original steel truss structure, now standing as a monument to one of the most ambitious engineering projects in American history. At the right time of year, the setting sun aligns perfectly between the two surviving sections.
The remaining sections of the Old Bahia Honda Bridge are under continuous threat from storm damage, corrosion, and sea level rise. The National Park Service monitors the structure. This image documents a specific sunset alignment that exists for approximately 2 weeks each year.
