Bonsai Rock — Fire Sunset

Lake Tahoe, California

Sierra Nevada · Alpine Lake · Fire Sunset

Bonsai Rock at the exact moment of fire sunset — the sky orange, the reflection perfect, the ancient pine-shaped formation silhouetted. This shot happens once or twice a season if you are there every morning.

The Story

How This Image
Was Made

Lake Tahoe's Bonsai Rock is one of California's most beloved photographic subjects. The standard image — blue water, blue sky, rock in sunlight — is beautiful but common. This image required something rarer: a fire sunset, where atmospheric conditions turn the western sky orange and the still alpine water becomes a perfect mirror. The combination of still water, orange sky, and ideal rock silhouette occurs perhaps 3 times a year.

Fire sunsets at altitude — caused by atmospheric conditions, smoke from wildfires, or unusual particulate — are becoming both more common and more extreme as California's fire seasons intensify. The specific quality of light in this image reflects a changing atmospheric condition.
